Position Summary
JOYEMOVEMENT seeks enthusiastic and self-motivated Teaching Artists for the Movement Lab Afterschool Program.
This position reports directly the Artistic Director and Education Coordinator.
Movement Lab is a movement based afterschool program focused on experiential learning through movement, community building, design thinking, and global citizenship.
As a teaching artist you are responsible for creating a fun and nurturing learning environment that engages students in creative exploration appropriate for their developmental ages. You’ll be responsible for implementing the curriculum.
Teaching Artist candidates must be experienced working with students, various movement styles, group management, and teamwork. Ideal candidates have a passion for arts and culture and have a solid understanding of choreography and dance vocabulary.
To provide enriching activities that engage students, applicants should have a solid understanding of age appropriate activities and movement techniques that engage youth with diverse learning needs and backgrounds. Monthly trainings will cover these topics and provide additional professional development.
Duties/ Responsibilities:
• Teaches classes at partner school sites
• Organizes and maintains all studio spaces following all facility and safety guideline
• Leading a program that facilitates guided discussions and hands-on activities, and meets the experiential learning goal of week
• Supports program assessment through duties such as evaluations, reports, and tracking.
• Participation in monthly professional development workshops.
• Inspire youth to create, play, and develop confidence and a sense of community through movement arts
• Collaborate and co-teach weekly class of 20-25 students of all backgrounds and abilities
• Implement daily activities and lessons based on provided Movement Lab curriculum - teaching skills through games and activities
• Establish a welcoming learning environment where students feel a sense of agency and belonging
• Develop positive relationships with youth and adults to effectively communicate and ensure a safe learning environment
• Communicate effectively with staff
Job Requirements:
• Candidates must be at least 18 years of age or older
• Candidates must pass a state of North Carolina background check.
Qualifications:
• One or more years in a K-12 education environment or other experience working with students ages 6-13 years of age.
• Experience with and knowledge of dance movement styles and techniques.
• Demonstrated experience and passion for the arts, art making, child-development, and teaching.
• Outgoing, friendly and ability to promote JOYEMOVEMENT’s mission.
• Extremely reliable and dependable.
• Ability to work between 3:00 pm and 6:00 pm, Monday through Friday.
• Experience developing participatory experiences for youth.
• Demonstrated ability to balance multiple priorities.
• Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
• Able to meet deadlines and ensure completion of projects on schedule.
• Experience with culturally relevant education, curriculum development and classroom management.
• Daily access to internet and communication via email and cell phone is required.
• Experience with collaborative team-teaching environments and/or inclusion/Special Education classes is a plus.

JOYEMOVEMENT is offering internships in the following categories: Social Media Marketing, Production, and Arts Administration. Interns will work directly with the Founding Artistic Director to develop the leadership skills needed in operating a contemporary dance company. Our internship program has been completed by students at Elon University, North Carolina Agricultural and Technical University, University of North Carolina at Greensboro and at Appalachian State University.
This internship is for college credit only. Interns will also have the opportunity to apprentice with the performing company and are invited to all company classes and rehearsals and will be considered for performance opportunities.
SOCIAL MEDIA/MARKETING (1-2 INTERNS) Projects: Website development as well as learning strategy to bring traffic to website, SEO, Google Analytics, and effective campaigns on various social media platforms and email newsletters. Will incorporate traditional marketing such as video production, poster design, to increase audience engagement. Must have excellent writing and editing skills, be creative, flexible, extremely detail-oriented, and work well in a fast-paced environment. Experience with Adobe Photoshop preferred. This deadline-oriented position allows for the opportunity to build an excellent design portfolio.
PRODUCTION (2-3 INTERNS) Prerequisite course: Lighting Design, Costume Design, Music for Dance or Technical Theater Projects: Continuing to refine and hone skills in lighting design, costume, or set design by continuing those skills and beginning to create a body of work for a professional company.
ARTS ADMINISTRATION (1-2 INTERNS) Prerequisite course: English, Philosophy, Economics, Statistics or Business Administration Projects: Grant writing, development strategy, creating a 501c3, and setting up an organized and efficient filing system and database. Responsibilities include assisting with special events, and general administrative support, including database entry, donor phone calls, correspondence, and grant writing. The interns in this position work closely with community partners. Arts Administration interns must be flexible, detail-oriented, and possess strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks at once.
