Artistic Director: Alexandra Joye Warren
Alexandra Joye Warren was named the Inaugural Artist-in-Residence for the Greensboro Downtown Parks in 2021 and collaborated with Elsewhere Museum and the Piedmont Blues Preservation Society in the development her original "choreo-play" A Wicked Silence.
She is currently an Assistant Professor of Performing Arts at Elon University, Director/Choreographer for the Music Theatre program. Alexandra completed the Yale University Summer Directing Workshop in 2021 and her most recent projects include 42nd Street (Director), A Wicked Silence (Playwright, Director, Choreographer), and Movin On’ (Choreographer) a new work in development by Julio Matos and John Franceschina.
Alexandra received her BA from Spelman College in Drama with a concentration in Dance/Pre-Medicine and an MFA in Dance Performance from University of North Carolina Greensboro. She performed, choreographed and taught in New York, finding a company home with Christal Brown’s INSPIRIT. Alexandra has been fortunate to study at Germaine Acogny’s Jant-Bi at L’Ecole Des Sables in Senegal, performed with Bill T. Jones in development of FELA! the Musical, Paloma and Patricia McGregor’s Angela’s Pulse, Maxine Montilus, Sydnie L. Mosley Dances, Maverick Dance Experience, Van Dyke Dance Group and Amy Love Beasley.
Alexandra has presented her scholarship at the Association for Theatre in Higher Education Conference in 2022, Collegium of African Diaspora Dance Conference at Duke University in 2022 and at the National Women’s Studies Association Conference in San Francisco, CA in 2019 and will be published in the upcoming book DANCE IN MUSICAL THEATRE: A HISTORY OF THE BODY IN MOVEMENT which will be released in 2023. She is a recipient of the 2022 and 2021 Multicultural Grassroots Grant from the North Carolina Arts Council and 2020 recipient Arts Greensboro, Regional Arts Grant.
As the Founding Artistic Director of JOYEMOVEMENT, a contemporary dance company launched in 2014, JOYEMOVEMENT has performed regionally and toured nationally at many colleges, universities, festivals and conferences, including Opening Night of American Dance Festival and at Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello in collaboration with activist Bree Newsome.
Now based in Greensboro, NC, Alexandra is married to Hashim Warren (New York Times Wedding Article) and mother to Madison and Moses.
